Reading

As Andrew has been learning to read, I've been thinking a bit more about literacy, what it means, and the blessing it can be in our lives. Yesterday Andrew picked up the book Are You My Mother? and read the whole thing to Edward. He was thrilled and, even though we have been reading it to him since he was a baby, acted surprised when he read the different events in that book. From what he did and said, it appears that reading something yourself is different from having it read to you. He also said that now there were words with the pictures. Of course there always were, but now he could understand those symbols. When he reads he gets a bright light in his eyes and an excited look on his face. Edward sees the excitement and is trying his hardest to also learn to read, though we are still on the alphabet and sounds right now.
